Do Now—Exercise 4A:
Akkadian – Akkadian was a Semitic language spoken in Mesopotamia.
Dumuzi – Dumuzi was the fifth Sumerian king and a god. According to Sumerian legends, he was a shepherd who wooed and married the goddess Inanna.
Enlil and Ea – In the Sumerian flood story, Enlil is the king of the gods who orders the destruction of mankind and Ea is a god who warns Utnapishtim so that he can escape.
Exercise 4B:
Silently read p. 20, ¶ 3 – 21, ¶ 5. Working quiely and (optionally) with your tablemate, answer the following questions with one or two complete sentences each:
1)With Atab (who, according to the Sumerian king list, was the tenth king of Kish after the flood), what was introduced into kingship succession? [Model Answer: With Atab, a bloodline was introduced into kingship succession. With his son, Mashda, and grandson, Arwium, Atab began the first dynastic succession in recorded history.]
2)How did the kings of Kish gain economic power? [Model Answer: The kings of Kish collected a duty from the traded goods moving through their city.]
Exercise 4C:
Read p. 17 – p. 20, ¶ 2. Write down dictionary definitions for “aristocracy” and at least two other words, and the meaning of “streaming-in” from p. 18.
Exercise 4D:
Summarize Ch. 3 in five complete sentences. You may focus on one or more of the following:
Enmebaraggesi / 2700 BC
Atab / hereditary rule / “The First Dynasty of Kish”
Etana “makes firm the land for his son”
