Do Now—Exercise 36A—Model answer:

Cyrus II belonged to the Persian Pasargadae tribe, which was the largest and most powerful of all the Persian clans. Cyrus II used Harpagus and his Pasargadae supporters to convince Median officials and the other Persian tribes to fight with him against his grandfather, the Lydian king Croesus. Cyrus II met Croesus at the Halys river and fought to a draw. As Croesus drew back in order to get outside aid, Cyrus II pushed forwards into Lydia and scattered the Lydian cavalry by bringing in camels, which frightened the horses into bolting. Cyrus II laid siege to the city, Croesus was taken prisoner, and Cyrus II’s troops plundered the city’s fabled wealth.
