Do Now—Exercise 8A: Your answer: In five complete sentences, discuss the evolution of Old Kingdom pyramid designs in Dynasties 3 and 4. Include Djoser’s Step-Pyramid, Snefru’s Bent Pyramid, and Khufu’s Great Pyramid in your discussion. Emphasize that this progression was a result of trial and error. Model answer: The evolution of Old Kingdom pyramid designs in Dynasites 3 and 4 was a result of trial and error. Djoser’s Step Pyramid was probably influenced by Sumerian ziggurats that Egyptians observed while trading. The angles of Snefru’s Bent Pyramid were changed halfway through construction in order to prevent the entire structure from collapsing. The architects and engineers of Khufu’s tomb learned from their predecessors and succeeded in constructing the largest of all the Egyptian pyramids. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, Khufu’s Great Pyramid of Giza stands at 481' tall.
If you did not know what to write during the Do Now time because you did not read the assigned material the night before, then write the Model answer twice (once in the Your answer section and again in the Model answer section).
Exercise 8B: In the four frames provided, draw the preparation of an Old Kingdom mummy (based on our “Making Mummies” reading). Try drawing like the Egyptians did!
HW: In your new reading packet, annotate the cover page, i.e., the page that has the picture of the Westcar Papyrus at the bottom.
