Do Now—Exercise 8C (hiding under Khnum on p. 2):

Use the textbook to complete the sentence:

The geographical source of the Nile River is…

(Answer: the Ethiopian Highlands.)

HW:

Read ‘A Marvel in the Time of King Khufu Himself,’ the fourth tale of “Cheops and the Magicians” (stop at ‘The Birth of the Kings,’ which is the fifth tale) and then work Exercises 8D. You may use the model answer.

Exercise 8D: Summarize the tale, ‘A Marvel in the Time of King Khufu Himself,’ in five complete sentences. Include the characters, Khufu, Hardedef, and Dedi and include the prophecy of the birth of the Dynasty 5 kings in your answer.

Model answer:

Dedi is a 110 year old lector priest who has the magic power of reattaching cut-off heads and knows the location of a hidden shrine. Prince Hardadef, the son of King Khufu (Cheops), summons Dedi to his court. Dedi reattaches the severed heads of a goose, a waterfowl, and ox, and a lion. Then Khufu asks Dedi to reveal the location of the shrine of Thot so that he can copy its architecture for himself. Dedi replies that he cannot do that, but prophesies the birth of a king from the woman, Reddedet, who will reveal that secret to the Khufu.
