Do Now—Exercise 9C:
Write the following verbatim:
Ur-Zababa – The Sumerian king of Kish, Ur-Zababa, was defeated by Lugalzaggesi and betrayed by his cup-bearer, Sargon.
Read:
p. 95, ¶ 1 – p. 97, ¶ 1
Exercise 9D:
In five complete sentences, describe Sargon’s birth story. What later figure has a nearly identical birth story?
You must write Your answer before writing the Model answer.
Model answer:
In the story of his birth, Sargon’s mother puts him in a reed basket sealed with tar. Floating down the river, the basket is discovered by Akki, the royal gardener. Akki raises Sargon as his own. Sargon rises to prominence in the court of Ur-Zababa, eventually becoming the king’s cup-bearer. This story is remarkably similar to the later birth story of Moses.
