Salt from the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers slowly poisoned the fields of wheat and barley. Because of the food shortage, the kings could not pay their soldiers to fight off attacks from the Amorites. General Ishbi-Erra defected from Ibbi-Sin’s rule and established his own rule, the Isin Dynasty. Finally, in 2004, the Elamite king, Kindattu, sacked Ur and ended the Sumerian civilization.
