Minoan civilization – Named after King Minos, the Minoan civilization flourished on the island state, Crete. The Minoans traded with the Mycenaeans and taught them how to write, but were later defeated by the mainland Greeks c. 1450 B.C.
Mycenaean civilization – The competing city-states found on the ancient Greek mainland – including Pylos, Athens, and Thebes – are referred to collectively as Mycenaean civilization . Historians have long considered all ancient Greeks part of the same people and named them after the largest city on the peninsula: Mycenae.
